Anita Kaplan Artists Statement
Why art in the form of quilts? Because of color. Because of texture. Because being tactile as well as visual, quilting feels good. Because I love the company of creative people who also love the experience of working with fabric. Because I love to teach and teaching quilt-making is so rewarding, presenting, as it does, such a huge range of opportunity: People who are just beginning to open to their own creativity as well as already accomplished artists can make wonderful quilts! People who want to make traditional bed quilts as well as people who want to go to the moon on the blank canvas of a quilt can have an equal experience of satisfaction and success. I push myself as an artist, always trying to take on something just beyond my comfort zone. I do the same with my students. My reward in my own work comes when I've successfully completed a piece of quilt art that had a new challenge in it, something I doubted I could pull off. My reward in teaching comes when I see the look on a students face that says "I did it! I actually did it!" Actually doing it is what builds confidence and confidence is what leads one to take on the next challenge. And pretty soon, whether you're in the "Can I do this?" or the "I can do this!" phase of the project, you're just loving what you're doing, doing what you love. |
